Just the Right Day for 15U Girls October 28, 2009 - Pembroke The date was October 25, 2009 and the Location was Fellowes High School. The 15U Girls played host to a mix of members from our Knights VC 17U Girls and "Serves You Right" from the Pembroke Women's Volleyball League. This day was all about seeing what line-ups worked and where the weaknesses were most present with the 15U Girls team. The day started with the 15U Girls taking on the Knights VC 17U Girls. Little sister challenging big sister to a match. The 15U Girls showed their potential as they put together a few strong attacks and were able to get a touch on some tough attacks. The girls lacked court experience and were also looking across the net to a highly explosive older team. They definitely had the gitters, but in the end the "Baby Knights", as they are affectionately known by the Knights VC staff, proved they had the skill to push the 17U Girls when they met again later in the day. A good beginning for the 15U's. The Knights VC 15U Girls then took on "Serves You Right" from the PWVL. The Knights would fair much better in this match as they were kept it close early. They passed much more effectively and were able to mount a bit of an offense. The setters were getting more comfortable and able to get to most passes, which in turn led to scoring opportunities. Errors plagued the girls and they ended up on the wrong side of the score, but improved from the first match of the day. While the 15U's talked over the two matches they had played, the Knights VC 17U Girls and Serves You Right played each other. The 17U Girls dominated their opponents and used a speedy transition offense to catch the opposing defence off guard. All teams were treated to lunch provided by the 17U Girls parents. It was a great time to relax and enjoy conversation (and cake) as it was Tegan's birthday.... Happy B-Day Tegan. The match after lunch saw the Baby Knights take on Serves You Right in a re-match. The 15U's did even better than before by scoring near 20 in the first set and 21 in the second set. The teams played a third set and that was the highlight of the day. The Baby Knights pulled out a thrilling victory, 16-14 and shocked themselves. The team of 13 and 14 year old girls were victorious over a team of adult women. Not too shabby. The unfortunate part of this match ending is that the 15U's had to play the 17U's again. The first set was forgettable as the 15U Girls fell into some poor habits. The second set, however, was exciting for the first 15 points. The 15U Girls pushed back against their "Big Sisters" for the first time in the day. A sign that this team posesses resolve and determination. Exactly what they will require to get through the roller coaster ride of an indoor volleyball season. Great job to all the 15U athletes and thank you to the 17U Girls and women that came out to play. The lunch was great and I think that these 15U Girls are on the right track for success.
