KNIGHTS VC - HI HO SILVER, 15U'S PERFORM WELL AT HOME

HI HO SILVER! – 15U’S Perform Well at Home

December 1, 2009 - Pembroke, ON

On Saturday November 28th, 2009, the Renfrew County Knights Volleyball Club hosted the first 15U Ontario Volleyball Association tournament at Fellowes High School. The OVA Provincial Cup attracted teams from Ottawa, Kingston, Cobourg, Cornwall, and Clarington. The Knights 15U Black Team had been training hard to prepare for their first big tournament. They held a distinct advantage over the other teams, being familiar with the courts and the facility.

The Knights started off the day playing Ottawa Fusion Purple, a newly formed team. The Knights took the match easily in two sets, defeating Fusion 25-14 both sets. Next, the girls faced the Akwesasne Soaring Eagles. The Knights struggled to organize on unexpected balls, but managed to capture the first set 27-25, and the second set 25-23. This put the Knights in first place in their pool which meant they would face the Clarington Grizzlies in the quarterfinal game. The Knights didn’t know what the Grizzlies would bring to the court, but strong serving from all players led the Knights to win the first set 25-14 and the second 25-10.

The undefeated Knights were up against, the also undefeated Northumberland Breakers, a strong team that the Knights had faced last season. The Knights went into the match confident and determined to move on to the gold medal match. A shaky start by the Knights gave the first set to the Breakers 25-19. Determined to win in front of the hometown crowd, the Knights fought hard to push the Breakers and took the second set in a nail biting 27-25 victory. The Knights kept the fans on the edges of their seats in the third and deciding set and defeated the Breakers 15-8. This advanced the Knights to the GOLD MEDAL MATCH! The were assured to move upward to Championship Division with a birth in the final.

In the final, the Knights faced a tough Ottawa Fusion Red Team in the final. Fatigue and a strong opponent was too much to overcome for the Knights and they never really pushed Ottawa Fusion, as the Fusion Red took both sets (25-4, 25-14). The Knights ended the day winning their first OVA medal, and a silver finish placed the Knights in the top 36 teams in Ontario. The next tournament on January 16, 2009 will see the Knights competing in a much more difficult division where they will need to bring their 'A' game in order to be successful.
