Pembroke Beach Volleyball League - RULES

RULES

Everyone will be eased into these rules in week 1. In week 2 everyone is expected to play legally.

MATCHES ARE TO 21 (rally point) and each team will change sides after each accumulative score of 7 points. Matches are best of 3 with a cap of 25. The third set (if required) will be to 15 with side changes after each accumulative score of 5 points with a cap of 21.

The main difference from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball is the elimination of the finger tips for the most part. The only way that you are permitted to play the ball with the finger tips is via overhead pass (volley) in which the ball comes in and out cleanly with little rotation in the air. So in order to overhead pass the ball (volley) it must be super clean. If you see the ball spinning it should be called a double contact. An acceptable overhead pass is to use a "flat handed" pass (keeping your fingers straight and your hand flat), but mostly it is recommended to use the forearms.

You CAN NOT tip with the finger tips at the net (including the block). Methods of contact that are permitted at the net are the "pokey" which is done when a player contacts the ball similar to a tip, but instead bends his/her fingers at the second nuckle and contacts the ball with the nuckles rather than the finger tips. You can also use a "roll shot" which is an attack that can be used to place the ball rather than use sheer velocity. If the ball is passed just over the net you may not press it down with the finger tips. The contact must be with a flat hand or nuckles.

The block counts as a touch. If the ball hits the blocker and still falls into the blocking player's court it counts as the first contact. That player is permitted to contact the ball again (second contact), but the third contact must be by the blocking players team mate and go over the net. If the ball hits the block and then the blokcing player's team mate makes the second contact, obviously the blokcing player is permitted to make the third contact which must go over the net.

There is no rotation required. Unlike indoor, you are not required to rotate. The only rotation that must occur is on the service line. Each time your team breaks serve the player that is serving must alternate.

When making a dig on a HARD DRIVEN BALL ONLY, a player is permitted to double contact the ball, but not lift it (similar to indoor). If the ball is not struck with force into the receiving player's court, the receiving player is not permitted a double contact.

Do not be afraid of the rule differences. No one in this league will be ignorant of the fact that some players are not used to the beach and it may even be the first time they have played in an organized league. Everyone will get some freebies in week 1 and learn the game as we go along.

See you in the sand.
